[Update: November 2025] A year ago, we published our predictions for SAP analytics in 2025. Now, as we close out the year, it’s time for an honest assessment: Which trends materialized? Which fell short? And what does this tell us about the future?

This retrospective review examines our 10 original predictions made in November 2024, comparing them against what actually happened throughout 2025. We’ve added reality checks, lessons learned, and updated recommendations based on real-world implementations.

1. Generative AI Becomes Mainstream in SAC

Original Prediction: From “AI-Powered” to “AI-First”

We predicted: SAP’s Joule copilot would become the primary interface for analytics, with conversational dashboards, auto-storytelling, and 25+ language support.

✅ What Actually Happened:

Joule copilot did become mainstream in SAC, but adoption was more gradual than expected:

• Conversational analytics: ✅ Launched in Q2 2025, now supports complex queries like “Why did EMEA revenue drop 15% in Q3?”
• Auto-storytelling: ⚠️ Partially delivered - generates bullet-point summaries, but full PowerPoint creation still in beta
• Multi-language support: ✅ Expanded to 18 languages (not 25, but significant)
• Predictive suggestions: ✅ Exceeded expectations - now proactively alerts users to anomalies

Reality Check: AI features required substantial data quality. Organizations with poor master data saw limited value. Lesson: AI amplifies your data quality - garbage in, garbage out.

Real-World Impact (2025 Data)

Customer Example: A Fortune 500 retailer reduced exploratory analysis time from 2 hours to 12 minutes (90% reduction, not 95% as predicted). The key difference: Users still needed to validate AI recommendations before acting.

2. Datasphere Edge Computing for Real-Time Analytics

Original Prediction: Edge Nodes Coming Q2 2025

We predicted: Datasphere would support edge computing nodes for local data processing at factories, stores, and vehicles.

⚠️ Reality Check:

This was our most inaccurate prediction. SAP delayed edge computing features:

• Edge nodes: ❌ Not released in 2025 (now targeted for H1 2026)
• Offline resilience: ⚠️ Limited offline capabilities added in Q4 2025
• 5G integration: ❌ Still in research phase

What SAP Delivered Instead:

Lesson Learned: SAP’s roadmap timelines are often aspirational. Always add 6-12 months buffer for bleeding-edge features.

3. Embedded Analytics Explodes in S/4HANA

Original Prediction: Analytics Where Work Happens

We predicted: 200% growth in embedded analytics, with SAC charts directly in Fiori apps and third-party tools.

✅ What Actually Happened:

This prediction was spot-on. Embedded analytics became one of 2025’s biggest trends:

• Fiori integration: ✅ Exceeded expectations - now standard in 50+ SAP Fiori apps
• BTP apps: ✅ Low-code tools like SAP Build now include native SAC widgets
• Third-party embedding: ✅ Salesforce, Teams, ServiceNow integrations launched
• Growth: ✅ 180% increase in embedded analytics usage (close to our 200% prediction)

Surprise Winner: Microsoft Teams integration became the #1 embedded use case - not Fiori as we expected.

2025 Stats:

Updated Recommendation: Prioritize embedding analytics in collaboration tools (Teams, Slack) over traditional BI portals.

We predicted: Banking (Jan 2025), Retail (Beta), Healthcare (H1 2025) industry clouds with built-in analytics.

✅ Mixed Results:

This was our biggest success story:

Original Prediction: Citizen Developers Build 60% of Dashboards

We predicted: Business users would build 60% of new dashboards using no-code tools.

⚠️ Reality Check:

• Actual adoption: 35% of dashboards built by business users (not 60%)
• SAP Build integration: ✅ Delivered and works well

Why Lower Adoption?

• Governance concerns: IT wanted approval workflows
• Data access restrictions limited what business users could build

Updated Recommendation: Don’t eliminate IT involvement. Enable “guided self-service” with governance guardrails.

8. Sustainability Analytics Becomes Standard

Original Prediction: CSRD Compliance Drives Adoption

We predicted: EU regulations would make SAP Sustainability Control Tower standard, with €1B revenue by 2027.

✅ On Track:

• CSRD compliance: ✅ 50,000+ companies subject to reporting (prediction accurate)
• SAC adoption for ESG: ✅ 40% growth in sustainability dashboards in 2025
• Pre-built content: ✅ CSRD, GRI, SASB templates delivered
• Revenue trajectory: ✅ On pace for €1B by 2027

Surprise Factor: Scope 3 emissions tracking (supply chain) became the biggest pain point - data collection from suppliers remains manual.

2025 Lesson: Technology is ready, but data availability is the bottleneck. Supplier onboarding takes 6-12 months.

Updated Recommendation: Start with Scope 1 & 2 (direct control), then gradually expand to Scope 3.

9. Mobile-First Analytics Design

Original Prediction: 70% Mobile Usage by End of 2025

We predicted: Mobile would become primary SAC access method with voice queries and offline mode.

⚠️ Partially Delivered:

• Mobile usage: 52% (not 70%, but significant growth from 40%)
• Responsive design: ✅ Auto-layout generation delivered in Q3 2025
• Voice queries: ⚠️ Limited beta (English only, simple queries)

What We Got Right: Touch-optimized controls and gesture navigation became standard.

2025 Reality: Mobile became “equal citizen” not “primary” interface. Desktop still preferred for deep analysis.

10. Open Ecosystem & Interoperability

Original Prediction: SAP Embraces Multi-Cloud Strategy

We predicted: Datasphere would natively read Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery with two-way sync and API-first architecture.

✅ Mostly Delivered:

• Multi-cloud connectivity: ✅ Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery connectors launched Q2 2025
• Federated queries: ✅ Works well, performance better than expected
• Two-way sync: ⚠️ Read works great, write capabilities limited
• API-first: ✅ Comprehensive REST APIs for all major functions

Surprise Win: The Databricks integration became the #1 requested feature - AI/ML teams love combining SAP transactional data with Databricks models.

What We Underestimated: Governance complexity. Multi-cloud data = multi-cloud security/compliance headaches.

Updated Recommendation: Embrace multi-cloud, but invest heavily in data governance frameworks upfront.

2025 Predictions Scorecard

Overall Accuracy: 7.3/10 - Strong predictions, but we overestimated timelines on cutting-edge features.

Key Lessons Learned from 2025

1. AI Delivered Real Value (Not Hype)

• Data quality remains the biggest blocker - AI can’t fix bad data
• Recommendation: Clean your data before investing in AI features

2. Timelines Are Aspirational

• Add 6-12 months to SAP roadmap dates for realistic planning
• Beta features often take 2-3 quarters to reach production quality
• Recommendation: Be an early adopter, not a bleeding-edge pioneer

3. Hybrid Approaches Win

• Pure “citizen developer” model failed - IT governance essential
• Multi-cloud works, but needs upfront governance investment
• Recommendation: Enable business users, but maintain IT guardrails

4. Mobile Still Growing

• 52% mobile usage significant, but not the “mobile-first” revolution predicted
• Desktop remains king for complex analysis
• Recommendation: Design for both, optimize for mobile consumption
